Virtual photography of glass is best done with a process called Radiosity which incorporates ray tracing, as such, but takes it to the next level of realism by producing more realistic shadows as well as inter-object illumination. We can also illuminate the subject with "environmental" imagery such as outdoor scenery and studio-type lighting environments.

This was a speculative piece I designed, modeled from an actual drinking glass we had in our cupboard, and with a frosted glass effect using a Japanese logo I found in a book.

There was absolutely no conventional photography involved.
