This is NOT a photograph. This photo-realistic 3D rendering was done as a demonstration of what a "virtual photograph" of a boxed product would look like.

For a physiccal reference, I purchased this box of tea from my local health foods store. I disassembled the box, laid it out flat, and scanned its faces. For an actual job, however, I would re-purpose the actual digital packaging art.

Once the 3D model of a given product line is created I can quickly and easily swap out the art for every other product in the line which utilizes the same package, in order to make an unlimited number of product images. Each will have perfectly consistent coloring, size, and lighting. They are also perfectly archiveable, so that new additions to the line in the future can be rendered in exactly the same way as the original series.

I normally deliver the virtual photographs in a layered Photoshop (.psd) format with the background perfect

Applications of virtual photography are not limited to static images such as these. The same 3D software I use to make the static images can make animated images as well. Download my animated demo (requires Quicktime 4.6 Mb) to see what I'm talking about.
